Protests against price and tax rises

Tunisian authorities arrested another 150 people including local opposition leaders on Friday, bringing the total detained close to 800 in response to demonstrations this week against price and tax rises.

Protests, some violent, flared across Tunisia on Monday, when one protester was killed, before ebbing on Thursday. Protesters have burned dozens of state buildings, prompting the government to send the army into several cities and towns.

Policeman killed in south Tunisia ambush

A police officer was killed and another wounded in a night-time ambush on a checkpoint in southern Tunisia, the interior ministry said today.

Two suspected jihadists were killed and another seriously wounded in the incident near Kebili, 480 kilometres south of Tunis, in what the ministry described as a “terrorist attack”.

President of the French National Assembly, Claude Bartolone, on Wednesday, reaffirmed his country's resolute commitment to support Tunisia's reform and development process, despite the difficulties it faces.

"France’s response to growth challenges in Tunisia is not at all shy,” Bartolone said during his meeting with Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, who is making a two-day official visit in Paris.

The brothers, aged 32 and 33, were born in Michigan and were arrested near the Algerian border. 

They claimed to be in the North African country studying computer science at the University of Jendouba, according to a Tunisian Interior Ministry spokesman.

France has called on its citizens in Tunisia to take extra care and be cautious, a statement published on the Foreign Ministry’s website said yesterday.

The calls come a day after Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi announced the extension of the state of emergency in the country for another three months.

Britain Sends New Military Training Mission To Tunisia To Counter ISIS


Britain has sent 40 military personnel to Tunisia to provide training aimed at helping the North African country prevent the spread of ISIS terrorists from neighbouring Libya, the British defence minister said on Saturday.

The training will focus on operational planning, intelligence, surveillance and mobile patrolling and is the third mission of its kind by British troops in Tunisia since 30 British holidaymakers were killed in a beach attack there.
