Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to a two-state solution in Jerusalem, saying it remained the only viable option to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the French presidency said

Palestinian leaders must continue “calling for calm and dialogue” if they are to pave the way for future peace negotiations with Israel, the 40-year-old centrist said during a meeting with members of the Palestinian Central Council.

The United States was further isolated on Monday over President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital when it blocked a United Nations Security Council call for the declaration to be withdrawn.

The remaining 14 council members voted in favor of the Egyptian-drafted resolution, which did not specifically mention the United States or Trump but which expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.”

Thousands of people have held rallies in Washington, protesting at US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel's capital.

The protesters gathered near the White House on Saturday, waving Palestinian flags and carrying banners denouncing the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The banners read, "Stop the occupation in Palestine now", "Jerusalem belongs to Palestinians" and "We reject Trump's decision."

Muslim leaders on Wednesday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and called on the world to respond by recognizing East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who hosted the summit of more than 50 Muslim countries in Istanbul, said the U.S. move meant Washington had forfeited its role as broker in efforts to end Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Macron also reaffirmed his "disapproval" of U.S. President Donald Trump's move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Macron said "what's new is that the United States unilaterally recognized something that is not complying with the international law."
