Soldier, three LeT militants killed in Kashmir

A soldier and three Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed on Tuesday in two separate gunfights in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police and Army officials said.

According to a police official, security forces launched a search operation at Magam in the Handwara area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir after receiving inputs about the presence of militants. Despite asking them to surrender, militants opened fire on security forces, he said.

 The two Garud Commandos of the Indian Air Force, who were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday, were part of the first batch of IAF personnel attached to the Army for anti-terror training in the wake of the Pathankot attack.

Official sources said the training of the elite Garud personnel with the Army was part of a range of measures the Indian Air Force (IAF) had initiated to bolster security at all its installations after the terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base last year.

Three terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Satora area of Tral in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter began early Saturday morning after the security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation on receiving intelligence on the presence of militants in the area. The security forces killed two militants in the morning, while the third was killed after hours of gunbattle, news agency PTI quoted a police official as saying.

An encounter between militants and security forces is underway in Redwora area of Budgam district in Jammu and Kashmir, news agency PTI quoted the police as saying.  A cordon-and-search operation, launched by the security forces Tuesday evening after receiving information about the presence of militants in the Redwora area, turned into an encounter as the militants opened fire on the forces, said a police official.

He also said that two militants are believed to be holed up in the area. So far, there have been no reports of any casualty.

The 24-hour long fighting erupted Monday after soldiers and counterinsurgency police raided southern Bahmnoo village on a tip militants were hiding there, police Inspector-General Muneer Ahmed Khan said.

Witnesses said the fighting ended Tuesday morning after troops blasted and destroyed four homes during the fighting.

Khan said soldiers were searching for the body of a fourth militant in the debris.

At least six police and soldiers were injured in the fighting.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Kashmir on Monday, police said.

Security forces had launched a search operation in the Bahmnoo area of Pulwama this morning, following information about presence of militants there, a police spokesman said.

He said one militant was killed in the operation, which was still going on.

The identity of the slain terrorist could not be ascertained immediately, he added.
