In the second ceasefire violation today, Pakistani troops today resorted to firing from automatic weapons and shelling mortars along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.

In the latest violation, the Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing from small arms, automatic weapons and mortars from 5.50 pm on Indian Army posts along the LoC in Naushera sector, a defence spokesman said, adding, the Indian Army is retaliating strongly and effectively.

A soldier was killed in Pakistan

A soldier was killed on the Line of Control in Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistan army initiated unprovoked firing on the Indian Army posts this morning.

Defence Ministry spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta, in Jammu, said: "The Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts in Naushera sector around 5.15 a.m. on Friday. The Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively."

Naik Bakhtawar Singh, 34, was severely injured in the fire exchange and died on the way to the Military hospital.

 The Army killed five armed terrorists on Friday as it foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.

"Soldiers deployed along the LoC in Uri detected... terrorists trying to sneak into this side of Kashmir this afternoon," an Army spokesperson said, adding, "Armymen fired on the terrorists, who returned the fire."

Four terrorists were killed and three soldiers lost their lives after the Indian Army launched an operation to foil an infiltration bid+ in Jammu and Kashmir's Naugam sector on Saturday.

The fierce encounter began when alert troops intercepted a group of infiltrators near the Line of Control in Kupwara district's Naugam on Saturday. While two terrorists were gunned down on Saturday, two soldiers were martyred+ in the operation.

Security forces foiled an infiltration attempt on Saturday, killing two militants in Naugam sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Two soldiers lost their lives as well in the encounter, reported news agency PTI. “An infiltration bid was foiled by alert troops along the LoC in Naugam sector. Two infiltrating terrorists were killed,” an army official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

State govt asks deputy commissioners to act against 34 TV channels

The Jammu and Kashmir government has asked all the deputy commissioners of the state to take action against transmission of 34 TV channels, including those from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, saying they have the potential to incite violence and create law and order situation.

The directive comes after the Centre asked the state government to take immediate steps to stop the unauthorised broadcast of Pakistani and Saudi Arabian channels in the state.

5.9 magnitude quake strikes Andaman & Nicobar islands


A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale today hit the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

According to National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, the quake, whose epicentre was in the Nicobar islands region, occurred at 8:21 AM at a depth of 10 kms.

However, it was not so powerful as to merit a tsunami warning. India has a dedicated tsunami warning centre that sends alerts to states and neighbouring littoral countries in case of an earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or property.

3 Soldiers Dead In Terror Attack In Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian, Woman Killed In Firing


In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in recent weeks, three soldiers were killed and four were injured when terrorists ambushed an army convoy in the early hours today in Shopian. A woman at a village nearby died in the cross-fire, police said.

The soldiers from 44 Rashtriya Rifles were returning from anti-terror searches at a village in Matrigam late on Wednesday night when they were attacked by heavily-armed terrorists at 2:30 am.
