Election Commission postpones Jaffna university forum

The Election Commission intervened to postpone a forum on the Constitutional Assembly Interim Report at the Jaffna University yesterday.

The Election Commission, acting on a complaint it received has written to the University authorities to stop the discussion on the basis that it is likely to benefit certain parties and disadvantageous to others at the upcoming Local Government polls.

Two Jaffna University student factions clash

A clash is reported to have erupted between two groups of students of the Jaffna University's Management Faculty after consuming liquor inside the premises on Thursday resulting in four students being admitted to the Jaffna Base Hospital.

According to reports the students had been behaving in an indecent manner after receiving the Mahapola Scholarship fees.

The university authorities said they would take disciplinary action against the students involved in the fracas and for consuming liquor in the premises.

Vavuniya Campus temporarily closed

The Vavuniya Campus affiliated to Jaffna University had been closed from yesterday (15) due to an ongoing reconstruction, Rector of Vanuya Campus Dr. T. Mangaleswaran said.

The faculties of the University of Jaffna, which were recently closed as a result of the class boycott carried out by students over Tamil political prisoners, were reopened on November 13.

Jaffna University students boycott lectures

Students of the University of Jaffna have started a boycott for five days over the solution suggested by President Maithripala Sirisena during a discussion held regarding the political prisoners.

The students had decided to boycott lectures till October 25.

The fourth year examinations, which were scheduled to be held today, were also cancelled by the University administration due to the boycott.

The Jaffna University Students Federation called a discussion this morning regarding the President’s solutions on political prisoners.

Police accused on Jaffna University student’s killing further remanded

The Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has ordered the five policemen who were in remand custody for the death of two students of the University of Jaffna to be remanded further till December 16.

The Jaffna Magistrate ordered when the accused were produced before him today (Dec 2).

The two students were allegedly shot dead on the night of October 20 at a police checkpoint at Kokuvil, in Jaffna.

Though police initially denied the shooting, the post-mortem found bullets lodged in the body of the student who was driving the bike at the time of the accident.

LTTE Supreme Leader Prabhakaran’s birthday celebrated at Jaffna University


The 62nd birthday of Supreme Leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Velupillai Prabhakaran was celebrated at the Jaffna University premises today (Nov 26).

The day was celebrated by cutting cake and sharing SWEATS.

In the year 2009, when the armed conflict came to an end, the Rajapaksa government started oppressing the Tamil communities and prevented them from commemorating and celebrating such events related to the LTTE.

Tamil Heroes Day was observed in Jaffna University premises

Tamil Heroes Day was observed in Jaffna University premises since Tamil Heroes week has begun.

In order to honor the dead Heroes, two minutes of silence was observed in Kailasapathi Hall, which is situated in the Jaffna University premises.

In the memory of Theeban, planting of trees near the memorial monument of Theeban has also taken place. A Vigil service has also been conducted afterwards, it is learnt.

University students, lecturers and university staff were actively participated in this event, local sources say.

Police entered Jaffna University premises threatens students

The Police who entered into Jaffna University has threatened the students. With regard to this incident, 

“We were planning to celebrate one of our collegue’s birthday and then there came some policemen who said they received a call to the 119 hotline. One of the policemen has used the sharpness of his tongue to the Security. A student questioned about bringing weapons to the University and he was threatened by the police saying that he would kill him” said Rajeewan.

Tribute to murdered Jaffna University students

An occasion was observed today (Nov 7) at the University of Jaffna to pay tribute the two students who were killed due to the alleged police shooting last month.

Jaffna University students have paid tribute by lighting candles and with flower to their colleagues.

The portrait of the students was garlanded by the university’s acting Vice-Chancellor and representatives of the student unions.

he five policemen arrested and remanded  in connection with the death of the two  Jaffna University students,   were   produced before court today  (4).

Jaffna Magistrate’s Court  has  further  remanded them  until 18th November 2016.
