Poongundran, who appeared before the investigators on Monday morning, was with the sleuths for more than 10 hours. “He is still inside,” sources said late on Monday. Poongundran was one of Jayalalithaa’s trusted aides, who had free access to the Poes Garden residence, while Dr Sivakumar is the sonin-law of Sasikala’s brother Sundaravadanam.

Vijaya Baskar’s quarry raided again

Continuing their raids on the premises of state Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar, Income Tax sleuths along with the Central Mines and Minerals Department officials inspected a stone quarry run by his family members at Thiruvengaivasal near Illuppur in Pudukkottai district on Tuesday.

Vijaya Baskar’s family members have been running various business establishments in the name of Rasi, an acronym of Ra Sinna Thambi (read as R Chinna Thambi), the minister’s father who is also a PWD and highways contractor.

Black Money In Polls: Election Commission To Deploy 400 Observers In 5 States

Over 400 expenditure observers, drawn from the IRS and other central services, will be deployed in five states that will see the Assembly polls, the Election Commission said on Wednesday. The observers will be used to check the use of black money and other illegal activities during the elections.

The observers have been allocated the states and constituencies after a briefing by the Election Commission, officials said.

Income Tax Department Seizes Rs. 48 Crore Worth Undisclosed Assets In Karnataka, Goa

Undisclosed assets worth Rs. 48 crore, including Rs. 22 crores in new currency notes, had been unearthed during searches conducted by the Income Tax department in Karnataka and Goa since the Centre announced demonetisation of high-value notes, a top official said on Wednesday.

"We have seized an undisclosed amount of Rs. 34 crores in cash and Rs. 14 crores in bullion, and out of which Rs. 22 crores were in new currency notes, post-demonetisation," Principal Chief Commissioner of I-T, Karnataka-Goa, Nutan Wodeyar told reporters in Bengaluru.

Over 2 Crores In New Notes Seized From Businessman In Assam

In a major seizure, the Income Tax Department today recovered at least Rs. 2.3 crore cash in new currency notes from a local businessman. According to officials, I-T investigators raided the house and business entity of Amulya Das, owner of Mahim Enterprises in Nagaon town, this afternoon.

"The counting is not yet over. So far Rs. 2.3 crore have been recovered. All the cash are in new notes of Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 500. The amount may increase further," an official said.

When contacted, Nagaon Superintendent of Police Debaraj Upadhaya confirmed the development.

Income Tax, Excise Intelligence Raid Jewellery Outlets In Tamil Nadu

 Income Tax and Central Excise Intelligence sleuths are conducting raids at jewellery outlets across Tamil Nadu following information that there were heavy gold purchases after the demonetisation of high-value currencies.

"We have begun our raids at gold jewellery retail and wholesale outlets today. We are seeing if unaccounted demonetised currencies were used for gold purchases and hawala operations through the gold market," a top Income Tax official told PTI.
