Sri Lanka to hand Hambantota port to Chinese firm, receive $300 million


Sri Lanka will hand over commercial activities in its main southern port to a Chinese company on Saturday (9) and receive around $300 million out of a $1.1 billion deal soon after, Ports Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

The deal, signed in July, will see China Merchants Port Holdings (0144.HK), handling the Chinese-built Hambantota port on a 99-year lease.

Landslide warning for six districts

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) today issued a landslide early warning for the districts of Ratnapura, Galle Badulla, Hambantota, Kalutara and Matara.

The NBRO instructed people in the region to be on alert on the possibility of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cut failures and ground subsidence and also to evacuate to a safe location if the need arises if the rain continues.

The General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Minister Mahinda Amaraweera stated that no one had as of yet signed the motion of no-confidence against the Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha, that was apparently pending submission.

A new party similar to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party?

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera states that attempts are being made to create a party similar to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), owing to the desires of a few to achieve the status of seniority.

The Minister added that targeting the instrumental figures who are attempting to reunite the SLFP was one stage of this plan.

He expressed his sentiments upon attending an event in Hambantota yesterday (11).

The warning of landslides and collapsing of bunds is to be heeded till 1.00 pm today (02), given that continuous rainfall is received.
 
The warning was issued once again to the 7 districts at risk by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) yesterday (01).

The occupants of the identified danger zones have accordingly been advised to evacuate.

Any Change in the Decision Taken to Close all Schools Affected by Floods Until Tomorrow


The Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education had decided on Monday (29) to close all schools in the eight districts affected with floods until Friday, due to the prevailing weather condition.

Accordingly, all the schools in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ratnapura and Kegalle districts are to remain closed.

The Ministry of Education said,  that there will be not be any change in the decision taken to close all schools in the eight districts affected by the floods until Friday (02).

Landslide warning for 8 districts remains in effect

With the prevailing weather condition is expected to continue, the National Building Research Organisation says that landslide warning issued for eight districts continues to remain in effect.

Accordingly, landslide warning will persist for Kandy, Ratnapura, Matara, Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara, Hambantota and Nuwara Eliya districts.

According to the Disaster Management Center, the death toll from the devastating floods and landslides has risen to 164 with 104 people still missing.

Dead Body

151 deaths have been reported across the island, owing to the extreme weather conditions brought about by the South-west monsoon.

The 15 districts of Ratnapura, Kalutara, Matara, Galle, Hambantota, Gampaha, Kegalle, Matale, Kandy, Vavuniya, Mulaivu, Colombo, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Nuwara Eliya have been affected.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) stated that 111 persons in total have been reported missing.

Over 400,000 individuals of over 100,000 families have been affected, reports reveal.

If extreme weather conditions persist, the districts of Ratnapura, Galle, Kalutara, Matara and Hambantota may be affected by landslides, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) says.

Accordingly, the NBRO has advised residents living near mountain slopes to evacuate as soon as possible.
