32 people missing after oil tanker collides with bulk freighter ,coast of China

At least 32 people onboard an oil tanker are missing after it collided with a bulk freighter off China’s east coast on Saturday evening, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Panama-registered oil tanker reportedly caught fire after the collision. A search operation was launched and eight vessels have been dispatched by the Chinese maritime authorities to rescue the missing crew members.

China will invest $1 billion in the construction of three 60-storey buildings at a mega-project near Sri Lanka's main port, Colombo said on Tuesday, as Beijing aims to boost its influence in the Indian Ocean.

The deal follows an earlier Chinese investment of $1.4 billion to carry out reclamation work for the wider Colombo International Financial City development, strategically located next to Sri Lanka's harbour, the only deep sea container port in the region.

 China accused the United States on Thursday of interfering in its internal affairs and said it had lodged a complaint after US President Donald Trump signed into law an act laying the groundwork for possible U.S. navy visits to self-ruled Taiwan.

Tensions have risen in recent days after a senior Chinese diplomat threatened China would invade Taiwan if any U.S. warships made port visits to the island which China claims as its own territory.

Secretary of state Rex Tillerson said on Wednesday the US is paying a close attention to Beijing’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ (OBOR) initiative, but sought to clarify that the Trump administration does not intend to contain China’s economic growth.

“It is not our intent to contain China’s economic growth. They must grow. They still have hundreds of millions of people that need to move out of poverty. But we do pay close attention to their OBOR policy,” Tillerson told the State Department employees in a town hall.

The Maldives has signed 12 agreements with China, including a pact to jointly promote the One Belt One Road (OBOR) programme, during the ongoing visit of the island nation's President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom here on Friday. The two countries also agreed to work towards signing a free trade agreement soon.

The agreements with the Maldives is part of Beijing's continuing efforts to persuade South Asian countries to adopt the OBOR programme, and hand over infrastructure construction projects to Chinese companies.

In a move that has left officials in Islamabad "stunned", China has stop funding at least three major road projects in Pakistan, being built as part of the $62 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, following reports of corruption, a media report said on Tuesday.
The decision by the Chinese government is likely to hit over Rs 1 trillion-worth road projects of the Pakistan's National Highway Authority (NHA), and initially, may delay at least three such ventures, Dawn newspaper reported.

Chinese investment firm said:China may become the world's largest importer within five years


In the past ten years, China's annual average import growth was six percentage points higher than the US, Xinhua news agency reported.

If that growth gap remains in 2018 and moderates by 0.15 percentage points in each of the following years in a baseline scenario, the country will become the world's largest importer by 2022, according to a report released by China International Capital Corporation (CICC).

By a more conservative estimate, China will become the top importer by 2025, CICC said.

"The entire world thinks the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) is untouchable, but it's not," said Haley here at an event.

"If the president chooses not to certify Iranian compliance, that does not mean the United States is withdrawing from the JCPOA ," she said, referring to the Iran nuclear deal reached between Iran and six world major countries, namely the US, Britain, China, Russia, France and Germany.
