There is now only one validly nominated candidate, Rahul Gandhi : Mullappally Ramachandran, returning officer.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is the only valid candidate in the fray for the election to the party president’s post, the returning officer said in a statement on Tuesday.
A total of 89 nomination papers were received from all over the nation, all proposing Mr. Gandhi’s name.
“There is now only one validly nominated candidate, that is Shri Rahul Gandhi,” said Mullappally Ramachandran, returning officer.
But his name as the next president will be officially announced on December 11, after the deadline for withdrawal of names “though, it is a foregone conclusion that he will be the president of the party. As per the Election Commission rules, we have to follow the due process,” a senior leader said.
The Congress however, insists, that no one was stopped from filing nomination against Mr. Gandhi, including Shehzad Poonawallah, who called the election a “selection” process. The BJP too taking on Mr. Poonawallah’s line has been labelling it as “coronation”.
