President Maithripala Sirisena reshuffles UNP pack

The much awaited Cabinet shuffle of the National Unity Government took place yesterday, with President Maithripala Sirisena changing six ministerial portfolios and appointing three state ministers and one deputy minister.

President Sirisena swore in new ministers from the United National Party while promising changes in the United People’s Freedom Alliance portfolios, within the next two weeks.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the new Cabinet Minister of Law and Order during the Cabinet reshuffle commenced at the Presidential Secretariat today, President’s Media Division said.

President Maithripala Sirisena said the government needs to improve its policies, programmes and actions to serve the people better following the people's message expressed at the recent local government election.  

“The first priority of my government is the people and the country,” he said.

Island-wide operation, 2,564 arrested for traffic law violations

A total of 2,564 wanted suspects have been arrested for traffic violations during the operation, said following an island-wide operation earlier today (24). 

Meanwhile 4,735 cases have been filed, according to Police Media Unit.

The operations were carried out on the directions of Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara from 2 am until 6 am today with the participation 16,526 police officers.

UK says taking the incident very seriously

A minister of the United Kingdom has spoken to Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana regarding the incident involving Sri Lankan Military Attache Brigadier Priyankara Fernando who displayed his shoulder flash bearing the national emblem to pro-LTTE protestors in London on February 4.

The Brigadier displayed this as a warning, during a demonstration on February 4 by LTTE activists in front of the Sri Lankan High Commission in London. The incident led to controversy, with pressure for removal of the Brigadier from office.

Traffic restricted in several roads in Colombo tomorrow


Vehicle move will be restricted from 5 am to 12 noon on several roads in Colombo tomorrow (25) .

The restrictions are imposed due to an international marathon which will take place in Colombo tomorrow, announced the Police Media Unit.

Accordingly, the traffic will be restricted from Chaithya road -Fort, Galle face centre road up to Kollupitiya junction and Marine drive from Kollupitiya to Wellawatte.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Underworld figure ‘D Manju’ killed in shootout with STF

A leading underworld figure and suspected drug lord ‘D. Manju’ has been gunned down following a shootout with the Police Special Task Force (STF) in Wattala, the Police Spokesman said.

He stated that based on information received by the STF regarding a drug deal, a suspicious van was stopped for a search in the Hekiththa area in the Wattala Police Division at around 1.30pm today (23).

Suresh Subramaniam elected President of NOC

Mr. Suresh Subramaniam has been elected as the new President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka. 

The election of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka was held this evening (Feb. 23). 

Mr Subramaniam is the former President of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association and newly appointed Vice President of the Asian Tennis Federation.

He was among the final two candidates for the top position at the sport governing body alongside Mr Rohan Fernando of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka.
